Application deadline:
February 20, 2004 the on-line application must be submitted to FAIMER
March 1, 2004 all supporting documents must be received at FAIMER

The IFME program allows faculty from schools of medicine abroad to gain access to educational opportunities in the United States that are tailored toward specific home country needs. Fellows study aspects of medical education that have the potential to improve and expand medical education programs in their home country institutions and departments.
Up to twenty fellowships are awarded annually. Preceptors in basic medical and clinical science departments or medical education departments in U.S. medical schools will provide mentoring. Eligible areas of study include: educational methodology, curriculum design, and evaluation systems. This study may be conducted in departments of medical education or traditional disciplines of clinical or basic sciences. Although the major emphasis of this program is to learn educational processes, Fellows may concurrently pursue some collaborative research interest with U.S. basic science or clinical faculty.
Programs range in length from six months to one year. Fellowships are limited to a maximum stay of one year.
The interactive, web-based application is now available on this website; paper applications are no longer accepted. The applicant must complete the on-line application. An official of the home country institution must complete the Medical School Nomination. The applicant's immediate supervisor must complete the Reference Report. It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit the Medical School Nomination and the Reference Report to the appropriate respondents.
Fellowship allowances generally include a monthly stipend of $2,400, round-trip economy class airfare for the Fellow only, and travel to one scientific meeting in the U.S., as appropriate. In addition, the program provides up to a total of $2,000 toward the cost of health insurance for the Fellow and accompanying family members. The only allowance for dependents is health insurance coverage. The U.S. host institution receives a modest grant of $5,000 of which $3,000 is an unrestricted grant for the host department and $2,000 is for administrative costs related to the fellowship.

Call for Application: European Cultural Foundation- The 1st Cultural Policy Research Award
Application deadline: February 25, 2004

Within the framework of Enlargement of Minds, an action-line on the cultural impact of EU enlargement, the European Cultural Foundation announces the 1st Cultural Policy Research Award (CPR Award). Focus: European enlargement - which policy for art and culture?
Enlargement is a transnational issue affecting countries already in the EU, those about to enter and those who will still be waiting to enter. The fact that the EU does not sufficiently examine its own cultural policy emphasizes the need for policy research within the European transnational context. We are almost fifteen years on from the major political shift that took place in Europe in 1989, and the ongoing process of integration has brought substantial changes- the cultural implications of these changes need to feature on both the political and research agendas. This puts at the forefront the need for cultural policy research within a European transnational context.
The main aim of the Cultural Policy Research Award (CPR Award) is to stimulate academic research in the field of cultural policy, with an emphasis on the implications of enlargement; the research will throw light on contemporary European cultural issues and problems, possibly analyzing them and working towards new policy solutions. The CPR Award should also contribute to the creation of a cultural policy "infrastructure"- a network of scholars with competence in comparative research projects related to cultural policy.
Additionally, the CPR Award project aims to evaluate existing research achievements, identify existing academic centers and promote an interdisciplinary approach in the sphere of cultural policy research.
The overall theme of the research is 'cultural implications of enlargement'. Preference will be given to those whose proposed research covers a topic of interest in contemporary Europe regarding the cultural implications of enlargement. Research may focus on a variety of topics. Proposed topics related to cultural policy education or the re-modeling of the cultural system and cultural institutions will be taken into consideration. Legal, economic, social, managerial, ethical, technological and other relevant issues (e.g. media & communication) will receive equal attention in the evaluation process.
Priority will be given to the evaluative, comparative and action-research projects, which cover the European or macro- regional space. Research outcomes should contain relevant policy proposals for systemic and structural changes, or innovative, new ideas for re-thinking the position of arts and culture in an enlarging Europe.
Young academics, researchers and policymakers (aged 35 or under) are eligible for the 10,000 Euro award.

Call For Papers: European Association of Social Anthropologists- Facing the former enemy: Memories of war and war crimes, September 2004, Vienna, Austria
Application deadline: March 1, 2004

The twentieth century has often been described as an age of extreme political violence on an unprecedented scale. Acts of brutality have left a host of horrifying and traumatic memories in Europe and other parts of the world. This workshop examines memories in the aftermath of war, e.g. recollections of massacres, forceful displacement, genocide, and crimes against humanity. Contributors to this workshop are invited to explore local face-to-face situations in which social or personal memories of political violence are confronted. The workshop aims at paying attention not only to the perspectives of former victims, but also to the points of view of former perpetrators.
We welcome ethnographic case studies as well as papers that re-examine the issue of social memory from a cross-disciplinary angle, for instance combining anthropological with psychological approaches to trauma and memory.

Query: Looking for Young Scientist Organisations/Mobility Survey
Application deadline: April 1, 2004

In order to collect information for the Early Stage Researcher Mobility conference in Lisbon (http://www.mariecurie.org/esrm2004/) Eurodoc made a little questionnaire about mobility among grad students and junior scientists. If you would have mobility experience it would be really helpful for us to let us know about your experience. You can find our questionnaire at: http://www.eurodoc.net/workgroups/mobility/survey.html
If you would like to become a member of Eurodoc's workgroup on international mobility (or be informed about our activities), please contact the coordinator Toni Gabaldon at jagabald@uv.es.
Eurodoc is the council for postgraduate students and junior researchers in Europe and tries to give a voice to doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers working in and outside academia. Eurodoc doesn't have individual members, but instead the national councils representing its country's young scientists are its members. So far, associations from 13 countries are members: Focus Research (Belgium), CJC (France), THESIS (Germany), DOSZ (Hungary), USI (Ireland), ADI (Italy), PNN (formerly known as LAIOO, the Netherlands), SiN (Norway), ABIC (Portugal), ADS (Slovakia), FJI-Precarios (Spain), SDOK (Sweden), NPC (United Kingdom).
Eurodoc is looking for national organisations in the European countries not listed above to join Eurodoc when that country has a national organisation for postgraduates and junior researchers. Importantly, Eurodoc is also keen on helping young scientists in European countries lacking such organisations as the need for an organised voice for scientists at the initial stage of their career could help to improve their chances and conditions significantly. Therefore we are looking for young scientists who are interested in establishing such an organisation in their own country. The idea is that interestees should write to Alexandre Urani at postmaster@urani.net or complete the form at http://www.eurodoc.net/organisations/futuremembers.php. Eurodoc will then put the interestees of the same country in contact with each other, with other people with the same interest in other countries and with the Eurodoc members and discuss the best way to organise such an association in the different countries.
